More Raging Grannies

I was just going to link to my friend Mother Damnable's blog but then decided this poem/song from Raging Grannies deserved its own spot over here as well.

She posted another in her comments box and yes, she was the one who asked me about the "grannies".

I read it and the first thing I thought of (beyond the tragedy of course) was the Woody Guthrie song "Deportee" (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos). Different circumstances but another nameless, faceless group.

THE CHILDREN OF IRAQ HAVE NAMES

Chorus: The children of Iraq have names
The children of Iraq have names
They must not be collateral damage
The children of Iraq have names
repeat Chorus

The children of Iraq have beautiful faces
They are not the faceless ones
The children of Iraq have hearts that pound
When they run and dance and play
The children of Iraq have many dreams
They are not the dreamless ones
The children of Iraq have twinkling eyes
They are quick and lively with their laughter
repeat Chorus

The children of Iraq have hopes and fears
They want to grow and live and love
The children of Iraq have smiles and tearsJ
ust like you and me
[SPOKEN: (Please repeat each name aloud)]

The children of Iraq have names
Call them Omar
Call them Mohamed
Call them Fahad
Call them Marwa
Call them Tibya
Call them by their names
but never call them statistics of war.

The Raging Grannies were mentioned in my previous posts about our snooping feds -- where they served tea and cookies to the National Guard officer who came to investigate their Investigation. They were also mentioned in news about the Pinks.
Speaking of whom, did anyone click over on that post and sign the petition?

It is easy to sing about the children of Iraq. It is harder to confront the reality of what WE are doing to them. I've posted about them on This Is War. In earlier posts there are sites to photos of horrors these children suffer, the terrible injuries these innocent Collateral Damages suffer. But we safe, secure, pampered, shielded Americans are protected from such images - our media does not offend our administration by publishing them. It might arouse anti-war sentiment. Or distress the delicate sensibilities of some.

AND did you know that WE, WE, THE GOOD OLD USA holds children in prison over there? Some are holdovers from Saddam's regime, some are victims of our own making. Some as young as 9 years old. But ofcourse they are held for their "own protection", just like these obscenity wars are waged for OUR protection. (Now is the cue to cry "terrorists", and don't forget "9/11" but Bushy-Baby will protect you). Yeah, yeah, yeah we're going to definitely get hit again, more BECAUSE of Bush than in spite of his efforts to protect us. He has done more for recruitment to terrorist organizations that anything done by previous administrations to engender hatred of us.

And now he's training a whole new generation to hate us with every fiber of their being. Even ther adults that once welcomed us now hate us ferociously. Way to go! Bushy-Baby!!

I heard about the Raging Grannies on a group I'm with and asked Granny.

I think they do more than just sing, I'm looking for groups in the UK who are working towards non violent direct action.

There is an anti war demo here in March

Take Pause; I visited your url and checked out more of your sites. You do a good work. Why do you vigil alone? Does no one care enough to join you?

I care. People tell me I care too much. How can that be? I think every human being with a shred of humanity in them should be raging in the streets to protest this holocaust visited by US and co-murderers upon the Iraqi civilians.

Some of the grannies were discussing showing up in a body at a recruiting office to enlist. Don't know if they've done if or were just planning.

We now have a couple joining our vigil.

Great Day in the Morning!! What an idea. Please get at least a dozen to go to the recruiting office and PLEASE, PLEASE notify the media in advance to be sure to have coverage. Spokesperson must have a good script of comments for the sound bites.
And ofcourse if you really do it, by all means post the news item on the blog. If it's on TV, record it, please. I will gladly pay for copy and postage. r

I wasn't clear, sorry. It's a larger group of raging grannies in a bigger city. We have only a few so far. So many of us were already up to our ears in action groups. We cooperate with each other on many things though.

I'll see if I can find the news item again.

Well, I can't join in person and I'll just rage from afar.
