The Pentagon and Your Kids
I knew about the Pentagon and the "No Child Left Behind" act but I sure didn't know about this.
For any of you who might not know, the government maintains a list, provided by the schools, of their students for military recruiting purposes.
Parents are allowed to "opt out" of the listing but how many parents actually know they can? I can "opt out" of the standardized tests mandated by NCLB but that tidbit is buried in the small print of the document the school sends home.
Now it turns out that opting out isn't enough. Your kids' names remain on file anyway.
From Common Dreams today.

Recruiting methods are becoming more and more agressive. Have you noted the macho ads, the perks offered as bait, freebies that appeal to the young? We do need a strong military and I don't object to that; I object to Bush needing more warm young bodies for his wars. And I object strenuously to the use of our National Guard as foreign war units. What part of "National" and "Guard" does our administration not understand?

My friend's daughter received a recruiting letter today from the Air Force. She had no idea how they came by her address since they had opted out (see post). I sent them this latest scheme.
