Connecticut Senate Primary

I've been silently watching the groundswell in CT for Ned Lamont who is opposing Senator Lieberman in the Democratic primary. It's a grassroots effort and it may well succeed.

The Washington Post published a lengthy article setting out both sides of the argument within the party. It's nothing new. Do we go along to get along or do we finally stand for something, win or lose?

The party did much the same thing in PA when they backed an anti-choice candidate thinking it was their only shot at removing Santorum.

At some point, we have to make a stand. We're going to be criticized no matter which way we go and we'll never be able to beat the Republicans on their own ground without turning into them. We might have won PA with the more moderate candidate. We'll never know. If we're going to lose, let's lose for what we believe. The war was wrong from the beginning and it needs to end as quickly as possible. Our civil rights are being eroded and the Constitution is being shredded. It must stop but it won't as long as we're holding the Republican's coattails and voting with them.

Senator Lieberman has consistently supported Bush on the war even in the face of dwindling support from the other party. He voted to confirm Alito to the Supreme Court. It's difficult to remember that the man is a Democrat. Now he's threatening to run as an independent if he loses the primary. To me that's putting personal ambition against the good of the party and the country.

He talks about bipartisanship and in normal times I'd agree. These are not normal times and the gang running the show these days aren't interested. They want total control of all three branches of government and so far they're making great strides. One more Supreme Court justice would do it. I shudder at the thought.

His defeat will send a clear message to the other hawkish or fence sitting Democrats in Congress.

I caught a discussion on NPR a couple days ago about Lamont. It sounds as though he has an excellent chance, but strangely many of the people who would benefit most from his election were the ones voicing uncertainty, and many said they would rather have what they know. Arrrrrgh. Such a familiar refrain.

I, for one, hope Lieberman loses. If we have Democrats like him, who needs Republicans? I think he WANTS to be a Republican, but they won't have him because he's not a WASP.

I am sick of him and his chasing the right wing's coattails; if he wants to be a Republican, then, dammit, he should become one. The trouble is, THEY don't want him. So, I am quite in favor of him losing his arse today.

I'm with you, Granny. I shudder at the thought.
