Granny, re: your comment below: denims and tee shirts? My kind of clothes! But that doesn't mean you're not a lady. So many people think that being a lady means wealthy, elite, la-de-da high faluting ms. snooty britches. I'll tell you the same thing the Old Woman always told me:
1. Character is what matters, not bank accounts.
2. Clothes doesn't make the man/woman.
3. A lady or a gentleman is a person who is courteous and considerate of others.
In a nutshell. It boils down to about that, no need for a lot of yakkety yak definitions. The Old Woman came from a good family and her grandma was a lady in the old fashioned meaning and she taught Old Woman all about good breeding which is basically being polite and considerate of other people. The family didn't have the big bucks any more but they were elite in respect and esteem in the community. Old Woman could be as la-de-da as the best but she could also be as down to earth as an old shoe. The only times she ever got snooty was when somebody insulted her but to most people she was democratic as hell.
I think you fill the bill for all three numbers I listed. Unreconstructed hippie or not you're still a lady. A fiesty lady. ;)

I don't know about Granny's house but the air in the Old Woman's apartment is still tinged with lavender, the leftovers from when she turned it purple.
Thanky very much; glad you liked it. I don't think anybody ever referred to me as a lady before except when hollering, "Hey lady, get the f**k out of here" or "lady you can't do that" or something like that. But they didn't mean it as a compliment. Usually they sound pissed off. ;) It is very nice of you to say I'm a lady. - Nvisiblewmn said...

Gadfly, I love your loyalty and devotion to the Old Woman. Everyone should have such a good friend.

Thanks JBlue. Yeah, I'm pretty attached to the Old Woman. You good people don't know my history. Granny says she's a unreconstructed hippie but she's a lady. She is a good person, is kind and helpful and always into good works that try to make the world a better place and polite to people. Hippiness is mild compared to my life in the past. I had my own set of morals (stuff I wouldn't do because it was really bad wrong) but I was hell on wheels and mad at the whole world, kind of took it out on anybody that crossed me. The Old Woman saw something in me I didn't know I had, took me under her wing and sorta civilized me. :) She evn got me to get my GED (helped me pass, barely) and helped me get a good job. She helped me in a lot of ways and she's my role model even if I don't model too good. She taught me not to be so mean and vengfull and always having to get even. She advised to always watch your back but if somebody is a snake, bless them on their way and avoid them when you can. Just don't give them a chance to bite you. But you don't have to chop them into bits, stomp the bits and set them on fire. :)
OK so I don't whup ass anymore but if somebody messes with her, I'd sneak around and do it anyway.
Yeah I'm loyal and devoted to her, she's my best friend and she has always been a true friend to me. I owe her a lot. I just naturally have to agitate her once in a while. Leopard can't change its spots completely. - Granny said...

Gadfly, you give me far too much credit.
Sometime when you have nothing to do, go over to "granny" and surf through the September/October 2005 archives.
It includes a lot of biographical stuff.
You don't have the market cornered on ghosts of the past.
Ann
Hurray! Congratulations! Good job!
