Federal Minimum Wage

How many of us could raise a family on $5.15/hour? Around $230. gross a week and less than $1,000/month. Before taxes and Social Security. The tax wouldn't be much but Social Security is a killer. It's usually hard, thankless, work for an income below the Federal poverty level.

That number hasn't gone up in ten years while housing costs, including utilities, have skyrocketed. So have the salaries of most CEO's. Depending on the state, these families may or may not be eligible for food stamps and medical care. How do they survive? Many of them don't.

How can this administration talk about "family values" with a straight face?

The Senate will be voting once again next week to raise the minimum wage. Here is a letter I received from John Edwards this morning asking all of us to contact our Senators. My state's minimum wage is higher than the Federal standard but that's not true of many states and some manage through loopholes to avoid even the $5.15 Federal requirement.

Please call or write your Senators (or all of them if you're feeling terribly ambitious) and ask them to support Senators Edwards and Kennedy.

I can't comprehend the lack of living wage in the U.S. No one can live on that money. I was a volunteer site coordinator for a homeless shelter in the U.S.--we had guests who worked full time who could not afford an apartment in DuPage County, Illinois (about $750/month for a one bedroom). Guess what? Several of them worked for WalMart. After that, I made sure to only shop at living wage companies (go CostCo--all union!) and tried to get others to do the same.

"Family values". I have always hated that phrase. Whose family are they talking about? People need to start boycotting companies that refuse to pay a living wage. They put profit over people--the end result is more poverty, more taxpayer funded health insurance, more crime, ARRGGHHHH!

Sorry, I'll get off my soapbox now.

I just ranted about the erosion of the middle classes at my place. $5.15 an hour: Is this what a Christian nation asks of the most vulnerable?

Wouldn't it be a single amazing act, to create a minimum wage that was a living wage. It's up to $8.00 an hour here in BC now and even that is tough. THe myth that it would destroy the economy is a myth. It means prices would go up and there would be market adjustments. It also means millions of kids would have a meal before they go to bed... and their moms and dads would sleep without so much fear and worry.

I agree with those above. I'm a big advocate of raising the minimum wage, too. And I just read some info that states that increase the minumum wage also create more jobs!

Giving people at the bottom rung (which these days includes the lower middle class in the US) a decent quality of life requires a full overhaul of society, but I wholeheartedly agree that increasing the minimum wage is a part of it. But if you can't buy insurance, and have your kid attend good schools, and a university if they are moderately capable, it isn't a living wage.
