AN AMAZING COINCIDENCE??

IS THIS AN AMAZING AND FORTUITOUS COINCIDENCE?

BushCo wants to monitor all our email and internet usage in order to fight terror.

The people do not want him to, consider it an invasion of privacy.

Some "experts" say it would be/is useless, that no terrorists have been caught via this method.

Now, ta-da!! Drum roll!!

By tracking emails and internet usage, Canada has captured alleged would-be terrorists plotting to make and set off bombs a la Oklahoma City using fertilizer.

According to the Toronto Star, "authorities refused to discuss the Star's story and have revealed few details of the purported plot....web surfing and email among the suspects led to the start of the probe in 2004."

The logical conclusion would be to thank heavens for the spying on email and internet usage so that our cousins in Canada have been spared tragedies like Oklahoma City.

But is this news item just a teeny bit fortuitous for BushCo? Is it a great coincidence for Homeland Security? Shall we all fall on our knees and beg BushCo to spy on our emails and internet surfing so that we, too, may be spared more horror?

It's a toss-up. How many believe that we will have some sort of emergency prior to the Nov. elections or the next presidential election? Do we sacrifice our freedoms in order to be "safe"?
Do we believe the Canadian tale? I do not doubt that they arrested some people; can I believe that they are guilty?

The problem with lying to the people so much is that eventually the people cannot trust anything that issues from the governments. Lies beget distrust.

I'm glad I can be the first to point out that anyone trying to use our terror case as an argument in favour of broad spying on internet usage is spurious and wrong.

First off, the source is not reliable - Toronto Star? Whatever.

Second, if the government needs to conduct wiretaps, it has that ability - we have a legal process to follow. Our police aren't stupid - they wouldn't jeopardize their case by violating procedure by doing illegal wiretaps.

Third, even if they did taps, that was only one method in their toolkit.

Obviously they're not going to give a blow-by-blow account of how they caught those guys - that would reveal their methods and allow future conspirators to hide their tracks more effectively.

Don't trust everything you read, even (or especially) in our media.

Given Canada's opposition to the Bush administration, I am not so sure about jumping to the idea that they are in cahoots with each other just so that the Bush administration can invade our privacy.

But you are right. There are many ways to communicate via email and other means without leaving trails. This proposal is just stupid.
