Bush Performs as Expected
I would have had this on early this morning but Blogger has been down most of the day.
Bush, flying in the face of advice from his wife and his Vice President, is supporting and even lobbying for that monstrosity, the Federal Marriage Amendment.
This may be the first time a Constitutional amendment has been used to restrict our
civil rights.
Does Prohibition count? I'm not sure, but it was repealed.
Laura Bush has said publicly it shouldn't be a campaign issue and Cheney is even more outspoken.
According to USA Today, one Democrat, BEN NELSON (remember that name), plans to vote for it. It's nowhere near 2/3 and he knows it. I'm not at all sure the Republicans will all vote for it. It won't pass, but to the man who may go down as the worst President in history, it doesn't matter.
He's trying for two things with this:
I think all of us who agree on this should phone our Senators and write letters, even when we're sure which way they're going on this one. Even those of you from the "reddest of the red" can let your Senators know you're displeased and those of you lucky enough to have a Barbara Boxer on board can let them know you've got their back.
They need to hear from someone other than these fascists.

Distract the Congress from concentrating on trivia like torture, the boondoggle in Iraq, voter fraud, domestic spying, campaign finance reform, health care, on and on.
Appease his few remaining supporters so he can stand there with a straight face and say "well, I tried". I've been writing letters and signing petitions even though I think the sun would rise in the west before Senators Feinstein or Boxer would vote for this. I still want my voice heard.

What I used to do when there were important votes, is call all reps and senators that were listed as on the fence, and as many senators as I felt capable of putting up with. Most of the reps and senators simply run bullet boards, pro and con. If they asked, I told them where I was from (IL, at the time). None of them ever complained I wasn't in their constituency, but they might have punted my comments anyway.
Don't limit yourself to your own reps. If the US were a democracy, that would be a reasonable thing to do. But it ain't, so vote early, and often.

I do a lot more through email than the telephone and I'm on a first name basis with our Congressman. (Doesn't always help but at least he listens).
Worried - of course he is and losing isn't a big deal, it's the photo op that counts.
I'm waiting to see what the moderate Republicans do with this one.
