Moveon.org and Motherhood

Here is a Petition from moveon.org which Worried American forwarded to me today. Don't know why I didn't receive it. I'm a member and they fill up my mailbox regularly. Oh well.

It's 2:30 a.m., I'm tired, I almost forgot to put this on here, and all of you are literate.

I will say that the one case history described in moveon's letter is horrific and if it isn't illegal under the Civil Right Act of 1964, should be. (Except you won't see the cover letter - just the petition, I couldn't link back to it successfully for some reason.) Their web site may have it.

Help eliminate the discrimination against moms that still exists in the workplace.

This is a national disgrace! Made even more disgraceful by the cuts in child care assistance and other social safety nets for poor people, especially single mothers.

Some smug, self righteous people have said of the hardships single mothers face, "well, she shouldn't have got herself pregnant if she wasn't married", or "she shouldn't have divorced her husband." Even though said husband may have been a deadbeat, an abuser, or alcoholic or drug addict.

Many factors contribute to becoming a single mom, who needs a living wage more than many other poor people.

And what about widows, WA? What's the employer's rationalization then? They should have taken better care of their husbands so it's still all their fault?

I have to go to bed if I'm going to be worth anything tomorrow.

Good night. Thanks for the comment.

Moveon had such a tremendous, overloading response that their site crashed. It's back up and running now. Try it again.

Granny has been a member much longer than I have but she didn't get the letter either. I was just lucky, I suppose. Maybe because my last name is close to the top of the alphabet on the address mailing list? I do not know how they are set up for mailings. lqyzvjsw

I don't know either. I'm a local co-leader which just means in theory the three of us get the requests for local action a little ahead so we can write our own emails to the group and begin planning. Leader is an exaggeration - liaison fits better.

In theory, that is. I sure didn't get this one.

I'll have to send it to the others who may not have received it either.

Moveon runs on a small staff and it has a huge mailing list. Glitches happen and usually the local members communicate with each other so nothing stays lost for too long.
