Conformity or Else
wemovetocanada has an excellent post today from the New York Times Magazine section of 1-15-06.
I suggest you drop in on her site to read her post but in the meantime, here is the article. She's on the blogroll.
She and the author point out that you can be gay as long as you don't look or act "gay". You can be a person of color but don't put your hair in cornrows, you'll be fired. You can be Hispanic orHmong but don't speak your native language in private conversation at work. There were many examples and some proposed solutions.
On a lighter note, I have learned to embed a link in the middle of a sentence, at least some of the time. It often takes two tries. Thanks to xpatriatedtexan who spent far too much time on IM with me explaining patiently.
His Progressive Faith Carnival for this week is completed on rocrebelgranny.blogspot.com.
His Carnival for the week of 1-16 can be found here
