Veiled (or not so veiled) Racism Already

These two articles, from Media Matters, were one right after the other in my mailbox today.

On Fox News Sunday , Williams claimed Obama's Muslim father "presents a problem"

NY Post headline on Richardson's presidential plans: N.M. Gov Throws Sombrero Into Ring."

Muslim father? Sombrero? What about their qualifications?

The NY Post, not the Times, YDG. Very different slant over there.

Fox News is most definitely not the epitome of taste and class. To the contrary, I'm afraid. I still for the life of me, can't understand how anyone can take anything those people have to say seriously.

    Peace,

i, like keith olbermann, wonder how these people keep their jobs. there is so much racism, misogyny, bigotry, and hate filled rhetoric i am shocked that more groups aren't agitating to get them off of the so-called main stream news sources. i entitled my post today- 'are white supremacists in charge of the right wing?' or something to that effect. i feel that it is a real problem and a real barrier to open dialogue about these very real issues in this country. i asked last week why we couldn't have frank discussions about how dreadfully the israelis treat the palestinians- i didn't get much of a response- but jimmy carter is getting nailed to the cross so to speak. and yet limbaugh and o'reilly and their ilk can spew lies and rhetoric and hatred unabated. does anyone else see a problem?

I've long believed that racism is worse than ever. We've just "streamlined" it so well, if that makes sense. We know all the PC things to say and do, and perform them flawlessly like it was a stage play, then, when we're alone with ourselves, "God, I hope that black *&^*^ doesn't stay here long!!" We can pass laws until we have a law saying we must have a law, but until changes happen within individuals, you might as well use those laws for the bird cage.

Just for information, the NY Post is owned by the same person who owns FOX. I'd forgotten that yesterday.

I am offended by those articles. The religion of one's parents or the race of one's ancestors is immaterial and reference to them is racist, rude and crude, even when uttered in a flippant manner.

Would they have said a similar thing in regards to Condi Rice's slave ancestors? Or MLK's? Or our esteemed black jurists? Or one of my paternal cousins who has a black father, and she hold an MBA and a very high position in the firm for which she works.

One branch of my maternal ancestors descend from Native Americans, the Cherokee, and a branch of my paternal ancestors descend from Apache. Some of each have been involved in public service and we would be offended if mention was made of war bonnets instead of qualifications.

Racism is alive and well in America even though many have left that degrading practise in the past. Certain people still practise it publically and get away with it; they should be called to account every time they do it. All too often when one is called to acount, the transgressor accuses the protester of being hypersensitive or in some other manner throws the guilt back on the other.

Qualifications for a position is the only matter to be considered.

OK, then could we ask Senator Obama to kindly step aside until he's more qualified? I think that he'd make a terrific president...in about 6 to 8 years.
