Florida and Voter Registration
Florida has passed a complicated new law assessing fines for submitting late voter registration. I don't want to get the dollar amounts wrong; they're in the truthout article but they're high enough that 16 late registrations would exceed the League of Women Voters annual budget.
The League has shut down operations in Florida rather than face that possibility and the AFL-CIO may follow if it hasn't already done so.
The law exempts political parties. One of the Republican state senators is sure "common sense" will prevail. When did common sense become a part of the political lexicon? It's another blatant attempt on the part of the state to engineer the outcome of elections by restricting registration of voters. By now, they've had lots of practice.
The LWV and the AFL-CIO are protesting, of course.
