PROTECTION FOR GRIEVING FAMILIES?

NO PROTECTION UNLESS THE PUNISHMENT IS STIFF ENOUGH. PHELPS AND HIS LEGAL-TRAINED BROOD WOULD WELCOME THE PUBLICITY OF ARREST AND COURT FIGHT.

Bill aims to shield troops' funerals; Washington --A bill slapping protesters at funerals with hefty fines and federal jail time is on the fast track in Congress. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., the legislation's main sponsor, said he hopes the House and Senate will approve the bill by May so President Bush can sign it into law before Memorial Day. A House hearing on the bill is scheduled for this week. In the past month, a spate of protests at military funerals have angered state and federal officials. The protesters were led by the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., which argues that the war in Iraq is God's way of punishing the U.S. for tolerating homosexuality.

Their freedom of speech stops at the other person's nose. At least two of Phelps' sons are lawyers as was he before he was kicked out so they probably know just how far they can go. As with our Planned Parenthood disagreement here some time ago, we are warned to not approach them and to remain silent.

First place, we won't stoop to their level; second place these groups make much of their money from lawsuits. The last thing we want is to put money into the pockets of these monsters.

I'd love to shove a sock in his mouth but unless he does something really stupid, the same Amendment that protects me (somewhat these days) protects him.
