Non-Believers and the Church
Alternet printed the story of a self-professed non-believer who joined his local Presbyterian church a short time ago. At the time, I read it with interest because some of his views were similar to mine.
I'm a member of one of the more progressive denominations (at least usually) who is not all that sure of her beliefs. This man saw his membership as a way of building bridges. The pastor agreed. Some in the congregation didn't and the Alternet letter in the title of this post is the pastor's response.
I don't want to get into an us versus them squabble about religion or the lack of it in our lives, but the article is well presented as are many of the comments that follow. Some are the usual rants; others much more thoughtful.

Only read part of the article (it's pretty long and I'm going through a bunch of things at the moment) but I have couple of things to say:
Know thine enemy.
And, I also joined the Presbyterian Church, voluntarily, as a teen. It was a great experience for learning and socializing. I loved the church but made the conclusion, in my head, that I would be agnostic for my own reasons.
I still have fond memories of the PC(USA) and the "frozen chosen". :)

How does that saying go? "The church is a hospital for sinners, not a hotel for saints."
I haven't read the article yet, but I will later today.

epm, I like that saying an awful lot. I am not a christian or of any religious persauion but believe that we all must learn to seek out what we can agree on rather then focusing in on what we don't. Which I think was what this preacher was saying as well. I doubt I could stand going to church...... I am usually bored by speaches and infurated by self-rightiousness (donna worry I realize how self-rightouse it is to be infurated by self-rightousness) but I admire someone that can do it with peace for trying it out. All of us must start see each other as people with flaws and respect that we are culturally diffrent.
