South Dakota and a Woman's Right to Choose

Worried American was unable to access the Washington Post today and asked for help. Neither was I. It must be something in the system.

Their article was reprinted in truthout today (click on title) No big surprise. Previous courts have held this same law to be unconstituional because it is far too restrictive and places an undue burden on the woman.

This will be a test case for the post O'Connor court.

Also in the news yesterday, the Court has agreed to hear another third trimester case

This article came from San Diego. I was having a little trouble with links as well but all the mainstream news is similar.

When I have a little more time, I'll research it further although I don't think we'll discover anything we didn't know before. South Dakota has one of the most, if not the most, restrictive laws in the country. They have one clinic and most woman cross the state line already.

If the other third trimester case goes the wrong way in the Supreme Court, South Dakota won't matter much.

It's simple. They don't quite have the votes to overturn Roe (at least not until Ann Coulter gets her way) so they're pulling its teeth a bicuspid at a time.

Granny Ann: I am so fed up with being thought of as a uterus with feet to these freaks. Where will it end? I guess maybe it will have to take several Red State blonde cheerleaders bleeding to death from back alley abortions before anyone dares to speak up about what a fantastically horrible idea this is. One need only look at a nation like Romania to see what happens when you outlaw all reasons for abortion.

Those of us old enough to remember the pre-Roe days and the horrors of illegal, back sreet or "coat hanger" abortions shudder at the prospect of Roe vs Wade being overturned. Especially those of us in the medical field saw too many results of those illegal abortions, the ones that survived, that is. Yet, in spite of the publicity about those terrible complications and butcheries, desperate women continued to risk them.

The red state blonde cheerleaders will never bleed to death in a back alley anymore than they did in the fifties. When families have money, these little inconveniences are handles discreetly.

I don't want to see Roe overturned, either. I would rather see ALL women have access to safe, surgical procedures--if they can find anyone to do them. Apparently, this is becoming a problem, too.

I work in the medical field, too, so I am much more concerned about patient safety than anything else in regard to this question. Abortion WILL happen. It's a question of the setting.
