both are symbols of our coarsening culture. not that i think we should be elitist- and i do think obscenity is worse than gross words- but both are used so cavalierly these days. damn or hell or even shit are common place--but you hear the f-bomb constantly too. once reserved for mega moments- this shocking word is now used mainstream. it really is a shame because really there is a place for profanity.
I don't mind a little profanity if it's not excessive. BUT THEN, I don't want to hear any words repeatedly, such as "like," "man," "cool," and you get the picture. Variety is the spice of life. As a mom, I've found that if you make a big deal out of any word, the kids are going to repeat it like parrots. Best just be low-key.
Obscenity is another matter entirely. And it infuriates me what people think is obscene (the human body) and perfectly acceptable (wanton destruction of human life). What a bunch of effed up Puritans we are.
