Which is Worse - Profanity or Obscenity

Thanks to Pat Greene at the Wild Winds of Fortune.

She expressed beautifully what I've been thinking.

I rarely use profanity but I can express a hell or damn now and then. For real profanity, the youngsters I used to work with in drug rehab, the hippies and wanna bes, could occasionally curl my hair, but profanity I can handle. Even the rare jaw-dropper the Wild Child can emit when sufficiently provoked paralyzes me only briefly.

But obscenity? No way. No tolerance at all. Sickening, actually nauseating, a feeling of having been dunked in a sewer, and somewhere deep inside a choking terror of an evil so repulsive, so insidious, so truly terrible that the mind cannot encompass it and its workings.

both are symbols of our coarsening culture. not that i think we should be elitist- and i do think obscenity is worse than gross words- but both are used so cavalierly these days. damn or hell or even shit are common place--but you hear the f-bomb constantly too. once reserved for mega moments- this shocking word is now used mainstream. it really is a shame because really there is a place for profanity.

Betmo; coarsening culture, I agree. Even in what once would have been called "polite society" one can hear gutter language used quite casually. The f*** and Mf***** words expressed freely as part of a simple sentence, requiring no descriptive whatsoever. I weary of it and disapprove but I can endure. However, obscenity as defined in Granny's article is frightening for what it portends.

Endymion; welcome to our blog. Granny and I appreciate visitors and value their input. It appears that you have an important story to tell. I hope you will begin posting on your blog soon.

You are correct: we do need to know our enemy, especially the enemy within. Parents will defend their young with all their might. Granny and I are great grandparents and we fight for our little ones' future through political activism. If physical confrontation became necessary, I know I speak for Granny when I say that both of us, although elderly, would fight to the death for our babies.

I don't mind a little profanity if it's not excessive. BUT THEN, I don't want to hear any words repeatedly, such as "like," "man," "cool," and you get the picture. Variety is the spice of life. As a mom, I've found that if you make a big deal out of any word, the kids are going to repeat it like parrots. Best just be low-key.

Obscenity is another matter entirely. And it infuriates me what people think is obscene (the human body) and perfectly acceptable (wanton destruction of human life). What a bunch of effed up Puritans we are.
