I hadn't heard of the acronym VNR until I read this article. I did know about the government planting phony news stories with the media (and paying them in come cases).
Now it's corporate America, especially in the health care field.
The Center for Media and Democracy tracked t.v. stations across the country who were using Video News Releases in part or in whole without outside investigation and sometimes passing the reports off as their own.
I'm not surprised at all. It's just business as usual.
And will the Prez decide he an ignore it? Seems to be the big thing these days.

ReplyDeleteTo be sure, failing to warn your audience when a VNR is broadcast is pretty egregious. (I blogged on this a couple of weeks ago.) But I actually think that this trend is less dangerous than another trend: Making the news by encouraging and funding sting operations.
