Good topic for a blog about whether America is burning... I think the authorities' handling of the situation highlights the underpinning racism and classism of our society, and I hope a lot of civil cases against the government come out of this. Too bad we can't try the USA in criminal court!
In spite of a few glitches [expected in a first time implementation of emergency procedures]Houston did very well in evacuating the city and coastal environs...2 1/2 to 3 million people in 2 days...and mobilizing an army of emergency vehicles, personnel and supplies prior to Rita's landfall. Too bad our LA neighbor to the east failed to do the same prior to Katrina's horrendous landfall with the subsequent catastrophic results. Houston dodged the bullet this time thanks to the storm veering to the east, but others suffered disaster. However, help is provided and in a more orderly fashion than with Katrina.
